Overview
A young family in Scotts Valley, California reached out to take their new home and turn the existing layout into something truly functional and full of personality. With two young daughters and a year packed with school activities and sports, the family needed an entryway that actually supported their daily activities. The design immediately sets the tone for who the family is. Playful, bold, and functional, it offers a place to sit and put on your shoes, store backpacks & sports bags, and of course, oodles of shoe storage.
The new dining room got a serious face lift, turning it from a dark unused space, to a room that is begging to be sat in and filled with laughter and family affairs. The wall paper, gridded with colorful flowers, speaks to the wainscoting that gives the space a slightly old English feel. However, modern lines, finishes, and art, quickly snaps it all back to the current age. There is a play with antiquity that is seen in the rest of the client’s taste that I wanted to honor here. And of course, a backlit set of display shelves that will allow the client to enjoy his cherished tiki cup collection.
Their kitchen, which had an awkward space at the end of it, desperately needed some customized attention. The average pieces of furniture would not fit here, especially with the exterior door immediately to the left and tall cabinets to the right. Being that the kitchen island is right in front, full of stools, this space needed to offer something different. Something more loungy, cozy, and calling for you to sip a cup of coffee. The clients really wanted built in bench seating, and we made it happen. Bringing in another playful wallpaper that speaks to an older time, the mood is once again set. Juxtaposed against modern pedestal tables and a wrap around bench seat. The lamp nestled into the corner of the benches atop a built-in table, brings the intimacy down into the space. Making it a great place to read a book or play a game of cards with loved ones. A group of one of a kind, colorful pillows, makes another bold statement and makes this once awkward space, a true gem.
