Perched in the rolling hills of Monterey, this Spanish revival sanctuary transforms a 4,000 square foot canvas into a vibrant personal retreat. Terra cotta tones punctuated by black and white accents are found weaving in and out of the space, while soft minty blues and golden yellows echo the coastal landscape beyond.
Original archways and soaring wooden ceilings preserve the home's authentic character, their weathered textures contrasting with contemporary art that reflect Julie's multifaceted spirit—medical professional by trade, colorful curator of joy by heart.
Surprises reveal themselves throughout the space—moments of serenity, of warmth, of bold celebration. Julie has a deep love for color, modern art, and playful lines, while the house brought its own voice, rooted in Spanish influences and earthy tones. In the end, the process became a true exploration of the many beautiful facets of who Julie is. She radiates life, joy, and humor, but also carries a deep sense of care, thoughtfulness, and empathy. I believe the design captures all of that—translating the richness of her character into the beauty of a home.
As evening settles over the oak-studded hills, carefully curated lighting transforms the grand spaces into intimate gathering spots. The preserved fireplace, with its distinctive gold fan-shaped trim, becoming a glowing focal point where friends and visiting family naturally congregate.
Sculptural pendants and warm accent lighting embrace the soaring architecture while drawing the scale down to human proportions, creating that perfect balance between grandeur and comfort essential for a true escape.
The master bedroom continues this intimate transformation, where Spanish architectural details meet a love for modern expression. It’s a unique blend of calm and boldness. The black accents throughout subtly nod to the wrought iron fixtures often found in Spanish homes—but here, they take on a modern form.
Abstract, colorful pillows add a painterly, contemporary touch, while the wall art feels like it lives somewhere between modern abstraction and ancient cave painting.
Custom lighting fixtures casting gentle pools of illumination that honor the room's soaring ceilings while maintaining the cozy sanctuary feeling essential for true rest and rejuvenation.
Here, the main patio extends the interior's serene energy into nature's embrace, where golden grass and dark green bushes frame sunset displays of pink, blue, and orange.
The design achieving its ultimate goal—creating elevated tranquility where this sweet couple can decompress from their demanding medical careers while hosting loved ones from back east. Every element working in harmony to transform what was once simply a house into a true sanctuary of rest, reflection, and California dreaming.
