Perched in the rolling hills of Monterey, this Spanish revival sanctuary reimagines 4,000 square feet as a vibrant personal retreat.
A love of color, modern art, and playful lines meets a house with its own voice, one rooted in Spanish heritage and earthy tones. The result reads like a portrait of its owner: Julie's warmth, humor, and quiet thoughtfulness shape the spirit of every room.
As evening settles over the oak-studded hills, curated lighting gathers the grand interiors into intimate spaces. The preserved fireplace, framed by its distinctive gold fan-shaped trim, glows at the heart of the home, a natural place for friends and family to draw together.

Julie's office is a retreat within the retreat. Bathed in natural light, the space feels at once grounded and airy, its palette gently lifted by the sun. Wavy, feminine lines in the rug echo the fluttering butterflies in the diptych above the console, lending a quiet sense of movement.

In the master bedroom, black accents throughout nod to the wrought iron of traditional Spanish homes, though here they take on a sleeker, contemporary form.
Abstract, colorful pillows add a painterly touch, while the wall art lives somewhere between modern abstraction and ancient cave painting.
Custom fixtures cast gentle pools of light that honor the room's soaring ceilings while preserving the cozy sanctuary.

The main patio extends the home's serene energy into the landscape, where golden grass and dark green brush frame sunsets of pink, blue, and orange.
This is where the design arrives at its purpose: an elevated calm where a couple can decompress from demanding medical careers and host loved ones visiting from back east. Every element works in concert, transforming what was once simply a house into a sanctuary of rest, reflection, and California dreaming.
